Remapping/reassigning the PTT button has been made as hard as possible by AT&T. Carriers are evil.
Editing the registry is one way to disable PTT and reassign the button to voice dialing or something useful. Some have tried PTTFix from XDA Developer forums. PTTFix is not fully compatible with the Tilt. It can accomplish what I needed, i.e., kill PTT functionality. But it can't make the button available for assigning to another application. I guess we have to stay tuned for future versions of PTTFix.

Or I might write an app to rewire the PTT button. Given how hard it is using this phone while driving, it does not make sense to waste the botton. Neither touch screen nor the slide out keyboard are easy to use using one hand. Editing the registy is no big deal, but it is not something I would want to do every time I reset the device.

Just came across the challenges you've had with "Push to Talk". Couldn't agree more. I'm on the phone right now with their ANS group, supposedly one of the most knowledgeable tech support group they've got. They were clueless how to disaable. While waiting came across a post in the Palm forum that explained the app. is installed on the Flash ROM so it can't be uninstalled and it does highjack the side button!
Talk about sinister!!
I was able to remap the PTT button on my AT&T Tilt to the Voice Speed Dial applet using the steps outlined here: http://mobilitytoday.com/news/008123/att_tilt_tytn_iI After adding these base registry keys, the Buttons Settings control panel displayed 2 new buttons(with no icons but I didn't care). I was then able to choose the voice speed dial applet for Button 6 and Calculator for Button 6 (hold). Did a soft reset and Eureka!
The Button settings dialog set a few additional entries. Here they are for Button 6:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\40C6]
@=""\Windows\Start Menu\Voice Speed Dial.lnk""
"WndCls"=""
"BtnWnd"=dword:00000000
"Flags"=dword:00000000
"ResetCmd"="\WINDOWS\sddialer.exe"
"Name"="Button 6"
